Parkland Asphalt Art Project

Intersection of Grand Avenue and 28th St. in Parkland Neighborhood, Louisville, KY.

Louisville Metro's Office of Arts + Creative Industries and the Office of Planning partnered with Bloomberg Philanthropies to produce a series of asphalt art installations within the Parkland Neighborhood. The goal of this initiative is to improve the safety of walkers and bicyclists with full color asphalt art treatments spanning 6 blocks of 28th St. between Dumesnil St. and Garland Ave. The project also features Louisville’s first street mural that will anchor the painted corridor back to Parkland’s business district and community hub where childcare facilities, local restaurants, a public library, a community garden, and nature play space are all situated around the recently completed Parkland Plaza.

The Parkland community voted on the color palette and I created the design! The material we used is UV-stable and solar reflective, lowering the temperatures on the street to counter the urban heat island effect. From Bloomberg Philanthropies and Louisville Metro's research, asphalt mural projects like this decrease traffic incidents by 50%. Thanks to the asphalt murals, Parkland pedestrians and cyclicsts will be safer when crossing the street and drivers will be more aware of foot traffic.
